Between tree and squirrel
is where I place myself on
the Great Chain of Being.
I am often merely functional,
serving without complaint,
doing my job, offering support,
saintly but structural.
Sometimes by grace I rise higher,
nearly to squirrelhood,
when I let myself play
like some frisky critter.
The universe wants to play.
It runs and hides
waiting for me to search.
It jumps out and yells,
“Surprise!”
It scares me silly.
Then we laugh and laugh.

Brilliant! Inspirational! This one came at the perfect time for me. I was feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities and tasks. Now I am refreshed. Thank you!
