Mark Twain, a lazy man, extolled the virtues of idleness,
made fun of the American work ethic,
and celebrated the boyish impulse
to skip school and sidestep work.
And who is busier than we are, even on holiday?
At an end-of-summer festival, I saw a young man at ease
in a grassy amphitheater, savoring the late-day shade.
Alone he was, though thousands were nearby,
they and I refusing to waste a second
of our Labor Day weekend.
Lord, we would be doers of your Word.
We would have our faith known by our works.
Teach us to rest one day in seven.

I guess I’m not very virtuous. I always figure that there’ll be time, you know ... later ... for a very very long rest.
