We speed upstream on the river,
moving fast towards the setting sun,
the boat’s engine roaring.
Ahead is serene sky and water
with a sliver of land in between.
Of that, for the moment, we are free.
The wind slams our faces and complains
in our ears but the brightness ahead,
the sense of the infinite,
of open exaltation, triumphs.
For the moment our senses confirm
we are blessed, that the light of God
has come into the world.
