"Epiphany" is derived from a Greek word that means "appearance" or "manifestation" (and has roots in the word for dawn). This is one of the oldest religious festivals in the Christian church (second century), originating prior to the celebration of Christmas. The significance of Epiphany for the Western church was the visit of the Magi and the "manifestation" of Christ to the Gentiles; for the Eastern church it recalled the baptism of Jesus which some believe was the real moment when Jesus became the Son of God.
